About Alya Mooro

Hi, I’m Alya Mooro - a writer, storyteller and bestselling author. I was born in Cairo, raised in London, and have spent much of my life somewhere in-between, navigating what it means to belong when you straddle cultures, expectations, and identities.

In 2019, I published my first book, The Greater Freedom: Life as a Middle Eastern Woman Outside the Stereotypes. Part memoir, part cultural commentary, it explores the nuances of growing up in the diaspora as an Arab woman - and how we begin to define ourselves on our own terms. Following its release, Glamour magazine called me a “Nu-Gen Feminist to Know,” which was wild and deeply flattering.

I’ve written for places like VICE, The Telegraph, Harpers Bazaar Arabia, and more. These days, I share most of my writing in my newsletter, The Greater Conversation - a space for the curious, the in-betweeners, and those of us still learning how to want without apology.

I hold a BA in Sociology and Psychology and a Master’s in Journalism, and I love combining those lenses - emotional, analytical, intuitive - in my work. I’m currently writing my second book, and continuing to explore themes of identity, power, and becoming across my various projects.

I’ve long believed that it’s easier to be yourself if you can see yourself. That belief is at the heart of everything I do.
